The Straits Cafe at Rendezvous Hotel is famous for its signature Laksa. For us teachers from neighbouring SOTA it often makes for a good staff outing for lunch buffets.
Today, we were all amazed by the quality of food throughout: wonderful dishes like ginger beef, fish curry, a super cheesy mac&cheese, our all time happening self-made popiah, and a wide spread of fresh salads. The buffet includes a sashimi corner, assemble-your-own laksa stall, and a good spread of asian and western meat and vegetable dishes.
The big winner, however, was today's pork knuckle. And as Bavarian I know what I am talking about. Many places in Singapore offer the traditional Bavarian dish; first I must say, it is no so traditional in the sense that it is not what the average Bavarian housewife cooks. It is really not easy to make good pork knuckle. The crust must be really crispy, the big chunk of flesh well seasoned until deep to the bone, and the whole piece must still be juicy. In my home, you will find the Schweinshaxn mostly in special Bavarian restaurants or at big festivals, like the Oktoberfest, as they turn out best in a specific huge BBQ.
I don't know how they made it at the Straits Cafe, but it was a perfect Haxn, tasty, juicy, crispy - approved by an original Bavarian :)
Wait, let me not forget: how often have you ordered Tiramisu in Singapore and were badly disappointed? Most cafes are saving on special ingredients, the mascarpone or amaretto or proper cream. While pretty much all cake slices and mousse and cream shooters were very delicious, the Tiramisu was so pretty much the best I had in Singapore so far.
All my respect to the chefs at the Straits Cafe!
Climbed to my league of favourite buffets in Singapore.
