Food Failure in a beautiful beergarden - RedDot Brewery at Dempsey
A cold beer, a pulled pork burger, under the shade of a tree in a beergarden - the perfect idyll how to end a day. The place would give it, the beer would do it, but twice i tried and the food is for me reason enough to stay away.
As hobby cook I know the time that goes into pulled pork: hours on the BBQ grill or in the pot, the delicate seasoning, and this rewarding result when the meat softly separated into juicy flakes of tenderness. If I read pulled pork on a menu, i react first with respect as it shows me that the restaurant doesn't go the easy way of short-cooking dishes only.
How to have respect, if then what you get if merely pan-fried pork in brown sauce on your burger? And then it even tasted like fried pork rests from the night before (pork is merciless, you just taste when it is not fresh).
I even let the dish go back to the kitchen asking for real pulled pork, and it came back just re-fried. Knowing the hassle of pulling pork, i did give it another chance few weeks later, but what I got was exactly the same: pan-fried pork with brown sauce. My friend had another dish (and he is a hawker cook) and was similarly disappointed. This all with pretty high prices for food.
The beer is good, and if you want to be adventurous, you can drink you beer green. Summer ale is my kind. However, just don't eat there.
