If one wants to eat Malay food in Singapore, one does it best at Makcik's home ... if that is not possible, you find a 'Nasi Padang' stall. Padang is actually the capitol of the province of West Sumatra in Indonesia, However, its food and style of eating has spread throughout Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. For several people, everybody usually gets rice, and then as a group you get plates of different foods, meats, fish, vegetables, sauces, etc which can be shared.
The Malay Nasi Padang has mainly the same dishes as the original Sumatra Nasi Padang, but - as my Indonesian friends say - Malay cuisine makes everything a little bit sweater. If you want to have the real Sumatra taste, Rumah Nasi Padang in Arab Street area, just beside the famous Sultan Mosque is a good choice. The gravies are thick herbal pastes, the tastes intensive and very varied between the dishes. You have the beautiful view of the mosque, often some music in your ears, and can later walk along the heritage area or visit the heritage centre.
